Wildfire evacuation order issued for properties east of Quesnel

Dozens of properties have been ordered to evacuate because of a wildfire near Wells, east of Quesnel.

The District of Wells issued the order at 10 p.m. on Thursday due to the Cornish Mountain Fire.

The BC Wildfire Service estimates the fire to be about 70 hectares in size and is burning out of control.

The wildfire was sparked Wednesday after multiple dry lightning strikes in the Cariboo.

The evacuation order in the Cariboo comes as the BC Wildfire Service crews said they have used their water skimmer on Okanagan Lake for the first time this season, as they battle the Spring Lake fire near Peachland.

According to the service, the wildfire was discovered on Wednesday, about 4.5 kilometres west of Peachland.

The agency said just after 6 p.m. Wednesday that the fire was “displaying rank 2-3 behaviour,” meaning it “has an open flame and moderate rate of spread.”

B.C. Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Bowinn Ma and the BC Wildfire Service is set to give an update at 10:30 a.m. Thursday on wildfires in the province.
