3 Coquitlam RCMP officers injured while arresting dangerous driver

We now know more about a dangerous road incident Thursday, during which a driver smashed into multiple vehicles surrounding the Coquitlam Centre mall.

The Coquitlam RCMP is seeking witnesses Friday — one day after arresting the driver in a parking lot outside the shopping centre.

Police say frontline officers responded to multiple reports of a white Ford Escape hitting vehicles parked on Lougheed Highway and Westwood Street in Coquitlam shortly after 6:00 p.m.

Witnesses told police that the driver also mounted the sidewalk on Pinetree Way as he travelled west down Lougheed.

Police reportedly stopped the driver in a parking lot on Atlantic Avenue near Johnson Street.

The suspect was alone in the vehicle but managed to injure three officers during the arrest. Police say the officers have since been released from hospital.

“Due to the time of day, this was a highly populated area and we are fortunate that no injuries were reported from the community,” said Corp. Alexa Hodgins of the Coquitlam RCMP.

Hodgins tells CityNews the driver was an adult man. She says he has been released following his arrest, but the investigation, including into how many vehicles he struck, is ongoing.

“We are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or may have cell-phone or dash-cam video between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2024 along Lougheed Highway between Westwood Street and Johnson Street in Coquitlam, to contact our investigators,” said Hodgins.

If you have anything to share, you’re asked to call 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2024-17886.
