Mechanical issue affecting BC Ferries Sunshine Coast sailings repaired

A mechanical problem with BC Ferries’ Queen of Surrey vessel meant at least three morning sailings were cancelled on Friday.

The 7:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. departing Horseshoe Bay, and the 8:40 a.m. departing Langdale were cancelled.

BC Ferries shared early Friday morning that it was “working to fix a mechanical issue on board.”

In an update, the ferry service said that repairs had been completed, and the next schedule sailing would depart from Langdale at 10:50 a.m.

In a statement to 1130 NewsRadio, BC Ferries’ spokesperson Ceilidh Marlow previously shared that the issue was affecting the vessel’s propeller.

“Our engineering team is working diligently to address the issue. While we hope to resume service later this morning, the exact timing will depend on the progress of repairs. We’ll keep passengers updated as more information becomes available,” Marlow explained earlier.

“To support customers in the meantime, we have arranged three water taxis with capacity for up to 12 passengers each, beginning with the 6:20 am departure from Langdale.”

“We recognize the inconvenience this is causing for our passengers and are committed to doing everything possible to keep everyone moving and restore service as quickly as possible,” Marlow added.

“The Queen of Surrey’s mechanical issue this morning, while unexpected, underscores the challenges that come with an aging fleet. We are actively advancing our fleet renewal strategy, with procurement currently underway for New Major Vessels on our major routes.

“We aim to replace four of our older vessels with newer, more efficient ships to meet growing demand and ensure long-term service reliability, and to add an additional vessel to our Major Routes to give us the increased resiliency to reduce service disruptions when these mechanical issues occur.”
