Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension to close stretch of Fraser Highway from April 1

Commuters who use the Fraser Highway in Surrey should be prepared for some big delays beginning this spring.

A stretch of the highway between 140 Street and 96 Avenue will be closed from April 1 as part of the construction of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension.

The closure will be months long, set to wrap up around Oct. 31.

Gilles Assier, spokesperson for the project, explains the project is part of a very busy 2025 for the crew.

“This is going to be very busy for the project, especially the advancement of all the guideway along the alignment. By the end of the year, you will start to really see a SkyTrain taking shape around the entire alignment,” he explained.

While the closure near the Jim Pattison Pavilion is going to have a big impact on drivers, Assier says crews will work to ensure that drivers know where they’re going.

“There will be alternative detour routes available, and we have and will continue to work with city staff to prepare for this closure,” he said.

The space the closure will bring will allow room for the construction of the Green Timbers Station.

“A full closure of the road is needed, which will enable construction, and ensure the safety of workers and the traveling public,” he said. “Our contractors will implement a planned closure of Fraser Highway … to facilitate that construction.”

Assier says, if all goes well, commuters should be able to hop on the SkyTrain extension that links the King George Station to a new one near the casino in Langley City in late 2029.
