Coquitlam firefighters battle home blaze that collapsed roof

A massive home fire in Coquitlam displaced a handful of people after the blaze collapsed the roof of the three-storey house Thursday night.

According to Coquitlam Fire and Rescue, the fire broke out before 9:30 p.m. along Lemax Avenue near Laurentian Crescent.

“Crews arrived and encountered heavy smoke with fire activity in the upper level and attic spaces,” said Chris Fox, deputy chief of operations.

“After making an aggressive interior attack and attempting to halt the fire, conditions continued to get worse and crews were withdrawn from the building as roof collapse above them became a threat,” he added.

“The fire is under control at this time, but it is not out, and crews continue to action fires in void spaces that are hard to safely access,” Fox said Friday.

Five people were home at the time of the fire, Fox adds, and when they smelled smoke, they called 911.

“All 5 made their way out of the house safely and have no reported injuries. The house is insured, and the displaced occupants have a place to go.”

“We have 23 firefighters and a Chief Officer on scene currently, and no injuries to staff have been reported. Our Fire Prevention team will be on site in the morning to meet home owners and will begin their fire investigation.”
