Plumes of black smoke rise after vehicle fire on Mitchell Island in Richmond

Drivers along the Knight Street Bridge reported seeing massive plumes of thick black smoke Monday morning.

According to listeners, the smoke was coming from an area between Richmond and Vancouver.

DriveBC traffic cameras showed the smoke rising up into the air.

In a statement to 1130 NewsRadio, Richmond Fire Rescue says crews responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Mitchell Island around 10:30 a.m.

“On arrival, crews discovered a vehicle in a dismantling yard under a temporary structure involved in fire,” Assistant Deputy Chief Grant Wyenberg said in a statement.

“Crews quickly extinguished the vehicle and the structure over it. A fire investigator has been dispatched, but there is no clear cause at this time.”

Wyenberg says no injuries have been reported.
