Downtown Vancouver shooting seriously injures 1: VPD

Vancouver Police Department says a 46-year-old man was found shot in another shooting on the streets of Vancouver's busy downtown. Angela Bower reports.

Police say one person was seriously injured after a shooting in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday night — the second violent instance in just a matter of days.

The Vancouver Police Department says it responded to reports of shots fired around 7:50 p.m. near Homer Street and West Pender Street.

In an update Thursday afternoon, police say when officers arrived, they found a 46-year-old man with gunshot wounds.

Police say the victim was taken to hospital and is receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

“The investigation is still in its early stages, so what transpired between the suspect and the victim leading up to the shooting is still being confirmed,” Const. Tania Visintin said Thursday.

“We know it’s not random, but it’s still too early to have any other working theories here,” she added.

Investigators stayed on the scene for several hours overnight, leaving the intersection and major thoroughfare closed to traffic and pedestrians.

It’s the second instance of gunfire in the area after a daylight shooting on Saturday left locals fearing for their safety.

That shooting happened around 5:40 p.m. on Robson Street near Richards Street. Police believe that shooting was targeted.

“There is no reason to believe this [latest] incident is related to the BC Gang Conflict, nor is it connected to any other serious investigations going on in the city,” Visintin added Thursday.

Police are now asking anyone with information about the shooting to call VPD’s Major Crime Section at 604-717-2541.
