Palestinian flag removed from Stawamus Chief

The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) says a Palestinian flag on the rockface of Stawamus Chief Mountain, known as Siy’ám’ Smánit, was removed over the weekend.

“Siy’ám’ Smánit is a sacred site within our Territory,” said Squamish Nation’s spokesperson and councillor, Sxwíxwtn Wilson Williams, in a statement to 1130 NewsRadio.

“Placing or hanging anything upon it is extremely disrespectful.”

The Nation asked the Squamish Access Society (SAS) to assist in the removal.

“As the area in which it is located is extremely steep and can only be reached by experienced climbers, we asked the SAS if a climber with technical experience was available to assist in removing it,” Williams explained.

According to the Nation, the flag was removed during the night between Sunday and Monday.

“The Squamish Access Society helped in getting the word out to its members (and the greater public), but it is not known whether any of the SAS members did the removal,” said the Nation in the statement.

“We would like to thank SAS for all their support.”

Williams adds that the removal of the flag is not a political statement.

The removal “reflects the significance of Siy’ám’ Smánit to the Squamish People, and the importance of respecting it.”
