White Rock passes pier accessibility funding

People who use wheelchairs will soon get access to one of the most iconic and popular landmarks in Metro Vancouver.

After months of back and forth, the White Rock city council passed a motion Monday night, on spending money for a special mat that will give wheelchair users and others with accessibility challenges the ability to go on the pier.

In essence, the mat will smooth out the uneven nature of the planks.

This decision comes after the city council approved to accelerate the accessibility project last month.

Despite the council initially saying the mat would have to wait until 2025, it fast-tracked the approval on June 10, with Coun. Christopher Trevelyan explaining that the city received a $25,000 grant to move forward with the project.

In total, the mat, which will stretch along the left side of the pier, is expected to cost about $115,000. The council will use the money from several grants.
